  The FBM230 Field Device System Integrator(FDSI)module provides a serial interface between single-port field I/O devices and the EcoStruxure™FFoxboro™DCS system.The FBM230 has four ports,each of which can be configured separately in software for RS232,RS422,or RS-485.This gives a single FBM230 the flexibility to connect multiple similar but not identical devices.The physical wiring complies with Electronic Industries Association(EIA)standards RS-232,RS422,or RS-485.The FBM230 and its associated termination components(TA)are suitable for a wide variety of connections to single-port devices;Connect directly to the device;Connections to modems for use with RS-232 communication interfaces,and multi-point connections to RS-485 devices.
  Serial link setup
  Data communication between the FBM230 and the field device is carried out through the 4-port Terminal component(TA).Two different TA’s,one with compression screw connection,the other with ring patch connection,each port with terminals for RS-422 and RS-485 wiring,each port with DIP switch selselable bus terminal resistors.For RS-232 wiring,the TA has four standard DB-25 male connectors with a set of 24 DIP switches per port that can be used in any RS-232 wiring configuration(e.g.,connecting Clear to Send and Request to Send).
  I/O drivers
  The FBM is a general-purpose hardware module in which different software drivers can be loaded.These drivers configure the FBM to recognize the specific protocols used by field devices.Some software drivers are standard products.Additional custom drivers can be developed to meet specific needs.These drivers are dynamically downloaded to the FBM230,and the software code is specifically designed for protocol interface with third-party devices.
  The configuration process and software requirements for each driver are unique to the devices integrated into the system.
  Configuration program
  The FDSI configurator sets the FBM230 port through an XML device configuration file.The port configurator allows you to easily set communication parameters(such as communication interface standards,baud rate,parity)for each port.Not all devices require a device configurator,but when it does,it configures device-specific and point-specific considerations(such as scan rate,data address to transfer,and amount to transfer in a transaction).
  Each FBM230 can access up to 64 RS-485 or up to four directly connected RS-232 or RS422 devices to read or write data.From the Foxboro DCS control station connected to the FBM230(see Figure 1,page 3),up to 2,000 distributed Control interface(DCI)data connections can be made to read or write data.
  The supported data types are determined by a specific driver loaded on the FBM230,which converts the data to the DCI data types listed below:
  •Simulate input or output values(integer or IEEE single precision floating point)
  A single numeric input or output value
  Multiple(packed)numeric input or output values(packed up to 32 numeric points per connection).
  As a result,the FBM230 can access up to 2,000 analog I/O values,or up to 64,000 digital I/O values,or a combination of digital and analog values,distributed across the FBM230’s four ports,up to the maximum capacity allowed by the user within the size guidelines for controlling the processor.The control station can access FBM230 data as quickly as 500 milliseconds.Performance depends on each device type and the data layout in the device.The FBM230 collects the required data from the device,makes the necessary conversions,and then stores the converted data in its database to incorporate Foxboro DCS plant management functions and operator displays.Data can also be written to individual devices from the Foxboro DCS system.
